100% smart

A friend of mine just taught me about Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences.  As she described it, everyone is 100% smart but we are smart in different ways.

Gardner separates the areas of intelligence into 8 categories: Language/Word, Spatial, Logic/Math, Body, Music, Social, Self and Nature.

I took a Multiple Intelligence quiz and discovered that I am WORD smart and SELF smart.  Not surprisingly, my biggest challenge is LOGIC/MATH.

This made me think about people in my life and the ways they are smart.  I also considered Multiple Intelligences in relation to the characters I am writing.  How are they smart?  What are their weaknesses?

If you would like to learn more about this and take a Multiple Intelligence quiz go to:

  4. It seems we (as a culture) put a priority on Verbal skills and think of people who are word oriented to be much "smarter" than people with body intelligence, like incredibly fast prize fighters or very quiet, street savvy survivors. I liked that book ~The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night Time~ because it captured through minimal language the incredible workings of an autistic mind and a whole other type of intelligence.

  5. i couldn't agree more. i think all areas of intelligence are necessary and important.

i loved the book -the curious incident of the dog in the night time- and i never thought about it in terms of another type of intelligence. cool idea.
