three months to go

perks of being pregnant

strangers smile at you
ice cream every night after dinner
naps with no guilt
the great name hunt
presents (see picture)
and of course,
the best part of all,
you get to meet you your baby
at the very end

may 23rd

blue hydrangeas
begin to bloom
in my backyard
revs his engine
waiting for spring
and his very first
hello

untitled poem

as summer approaches
i cover my face
wanting to find
my own quiet place
to lay my head
on a cool, crisp sheet
why can't i have
a nap that's complete
without all this light
and sunshine and cheer
when will it leave?
never, i fear
i want to sleep
for all of the day
so nighttime come quick
please don't delay
your pale moons and gray
skylines above
in darkness i rest
peaceful, in love

on my birthday

things i love
waking up with both cats snuggled close
a weekend with nothing to do
air that smells clean after a long day of rain
vanilla ice cream
the beginning of a great book
a clean bill of health from the dentist
the way my husband tells a joke
toast and early mornings

surprise!

at first i thought
you were a girl
fluttering about
like a baby bird
holding her secret
under wing

and then i realized
you're a boy!
banging against
his mama's belly
as if he were
a plane
a rocket
a racecar

things that scare me

barking dogs
who bare white teeth
behind an iron fence

a city street
with nobody on it
in the middle of the day

the sound of breaking glass
as the earth rumbles
underneath my feet

babies who cry
kitties who leave
and water that won't stop running

three thousand miles

my first christmas
without snow tingling air
and white clouds of breath
as soon as you step outside
my first christmas
without stockings in the new room
and obeying granny's morning rule
no presents before eight thirty!
my first christmas
without eggs benedict on an english muffin
sitting in grandaddy's study
playing backgammon with lucky dice

mama

a solid stone house
with sweet blue shutters
stands before a pasture
like a proud mama
showing her baby
to the world
this little cottage
steps back
as lush green trees
the edging of yellow grass
a field full of lavender
shines in front of her
