backyard scrabble

Did you know there was such a thing as backyard Scrabble?  My biggest concern is that it would hurt my back to constantly bend over and place the letters down, especially when you have a really long word!  Plus, I love to play Scrabble on rainy days, which would be a bit of a problem.

on my birthday

things i love
waking up with both cats snuggled close
a weekend with nothing to do
air that smells clean after a long day of rain
vanilla ice cream
the beginning of a great book
a clean bill of health from the dentist
the way my husband tells a joke
toast and early mornings

calling all gardners

This fragrant vine just started blooming on our front porch.  I'd love to plant more, but I don't know what kind of flower it is. Any ideas?

tub of glass

i'm the only one
who sees you
the only one
who cares
i listen to
your heartbeat
as you look at me
and stare
i know you want
to leave
that small salt water tub
but what am i to do?
you're not a
little cub
way too big to carry
or tuck you in my purse
and if i got you home
my family would think
they're cursed
i'm sorry to say
my sweet, sweet friend
i have to let
you be
to swim along
the smooth, clear glass
so far away
from free

revolting rhymes

Revolting Rhymes
By Roald Dahl
Illustrated by Quentin Blake

Synopsis from Goodreads: Do you think Cinderella married the prince and lived happily ever after, and that the three little pigs outsmarted the wolf? Think again! Premier storyteller Roald Dahl twists the fate of six favorite fairy tales, in this picture book edition with vibrant new cover art by Quentin Blake. Fairy tales have never been more revolting!

What I think: Roald Dahl is one of my very favorite writers and this collection of fairy tales had me laughing out loud.  My particular favorite is Dahl's version of Cinderella.  Instead of marrying the prince, she ends up with "a simple jam-maker by trade/ who sold good home-made marmalade/their house was filled with smiles and laughter/ and they were happy ever after."
